THE ENGAGEMENT
Future by Design(TM) helps community colleges build an integrated future-readiness ecosystem connecting academic pathways, career exploration, workforce preparation, transfer, credentials, employer engagement and personal agency. The framework is designed for the full range of community college learners - including recent high school graduates, adult learners, career changers, CTE students, transfer students and working professionals.
The goal is not simply to help students choose a job. It is to help learners understand their assets, see possibilities, build relationships, gain relevant experiences and translate education into meaningful next steps.
THE CENTRAL QUESTION
How does a community college help every learner understand where they are going, why their pathway matters, who can help them get there, and what they should do next?
Future by Design(TM) creates a common architecture for helping learners navigate multiple pathways with greater clarity, agency, connection and action.
The Community College Imperative
Community college students do not follow one educational journey. They may be preparing to transfer, earning an associate degree, completing a short-term credential, entering an apprenticeship, changing careers, building new technical skills, launching a business or returning to education after years in the workforce. That complexity makes future readiness an institutional responsibility - not simply a career services function.
Future by Design(TM) creates a shared language and student-centered process that can connect advising, academic affairs, workforce development, career services, transfer, student affairs and employer partnerships.
FOUR EXECUTIVE QUESTIONS
CLARITY: Do our students understand how their education connects to the futures they want to build?
CONNECTION: Are academic programs, advising, career services, workforce development, transfer and employer engagement operating as an integrated ecosystem?
AGENCY: Are students developing the confidence, networks, experiences and skills to navigate education and work beyond the college?
ACTION: Can we see measurable evidence that students are progressing from exploration to credentials, transfer, employment and economic mobility?
MULTIPLE DEFINITIONS OF SUCCESS
Future by Design deliberately avoids assuming that success always means a four-year degree.
The framework can support multiple destinations:
TRANSFER CREDENTIAL APPRENTICESHIP
EMPLOYMENT ENTREPRENEURSHIP CAREER ADVANCEMENT
CONTINUED EDUCATION ECONOMIC MOBILITY COMMUNITY IMPACT
